The Iota Nu chapter of Delta Sigma Pi's philanthropy is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. One of Iota Nu's founding members had CF so it has always been close to our hearts. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. An estimated 30,000 children and adults in the US have Cystic Fibrosis. For people with Cystic Fibrosis, a defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It also obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care. The Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. They fund more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. When the CF Foundation began, most patients did not live to attend their first day of elementary school. Now, thanks to the research and care supported by the Foundation, the median predicted age of survival for a person with cystic fibrosis is now about 40 years.
Iota Nu raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by ticket sales from Truman's Got Talent in the fall semester, and now we have a CF Awareness Week to go along with the talent show. We raise money with a 5K race, and a silent auction for Parents Day. There is also a bucket to donate to CF at all the sporting events we run concessions at.
